Driving yesterday, waiting for the green light, the words on the delivery truck beside me caught my eye: “Do not delay, perishable goods”. It reminded me never to over shop again for perishables because just that very morning, I’d emptied my fridge of rotten vegetables that had been neglected due to an unexpected out of town trip. Now that I’m reading this Sunday’s gospel which talks about “food that perishes”, that mundane reminder about the rotten vegetables returns and hands me its verdict: “Guilty!” I plead guilty. Like so many other workaholics who-shackled by the need to work and to feed them selves in order to stay alive and work some more-often neglect not only the food in the fridge but also the “food that endures for eternal life.”

Work can be so fascinating, fatiguing, exhilarating, exhausting, fulfilling, and boring, but always worth our time. Work buys us everything we need-shelter, food, clothing, education, amusement, and sometimes it even buys us friends-so naturally we get attached to work. And when we so love our work that it becomes our bread and our face, it can also lead us to think that believing in ourselves is all that matters in work. But that’s not so-as we realize when confronting insurmountable problems at work. There is also the need to believe in the heaven-sent “bread” that prepares us for life after life. Believe-not because other people tell us to, but believe for no other reason that that. He is love! Because of love, we are here, and because He came down to earth to live among us, we know that there is somewhere else to go after this.

Austrian psychiatrist Theodor Reik once said, “Work and love-these are basics. Without them there is neurosis.” How so succinct, but with due respect to Mr. Reik, I dare say: work and love are basic, but without love, work is neurosis.
